This Act is Very common amongst dogs. It can be caused by both behavioral and physiological reasons. 1 in 6 dogs have engaged in poop eating multiple times in their life and 1 in 4 have done it at least once.
It is thought that it is “in a Dog’s DNA” to eat poop as it was done with their ancestors to protect the pack from parasites. Dog’s are scavengers by nature so it’s normal for them to find and eat whatever they can.
Poop eating is a natural canine behavior at some life stages. In most cases, this behavior will fade before the puppy is about nine months old.
Puppies naturally engage in this behavior, eating their own poop (autocoprophagia), poop from other dogs (allocoprophagia), as well as poop from cats and other animals. Eating their own poop is HARMLESS, but eating from other animals may cause health problems if it’s contaminated.
This act is more common in multi dog household and amongst females.🐾
There’s been a long-standing theory that dogs eat poop because they are missing something in their diets.
Vitamin-B deficiency, in particular, has been a prime suspect, and studies have backed this up.
Overall, your dog eating poop will not harm them, but if you want to prevent this act, there are simple solutions that will be dependent on the reason why your pup is doing the deed!
Some ways that you can combat this unpleasant habit is with digestive enzymes & probiotics (best paired with vitamin supplementation). This can help if your pet is lacking in any nutrients that may cause this behavior in their diet. Our formula helps to breakdown food for more efficient absorption
