Hot spots (aka Acute Moist Dermatitis) is a localized area of skin inflammation and bacterial infection. They are identified as well defined areas of redness, swelling, and hair loss. They can occur anywhere on your pet's body, but the most common areas are on the head, limbs, & hips.
These spots are usually moist and extremely irritated. They can sometimes discharge pus or fluid, which can lead to crusting and matting of the surrounding hair. Hot spots are painful and very itchy and will rapidly grow as your pet continues to scratch, chew, or lick the area.
Any condition resulting in itching can result in a hot spot. Some conditions that may lead to a hot spot are: Food allergies, parasites & fleas, stress & boredom, dry skin, moisture trapped in coat, contact irritants, & more.
Pet owners must treat the underlying cause. Probiotics & digestive enzymes can help to decrease inflammation from within the gut to reduce itching symptoms. Consult with your vet if this is right for your pet.
